About the Center

THE CESGRi

The Research Center for Sustainability & Risk Management (CESGRi), was set up to support public and private organizations in the development of specific knowledge in organizational, institutional, and operational risk management. By way of applied research, CESGRi maps the culture, institutional voids, and operations management of public and private organizations that imply possible risks for these organizations’ different stakeholders. The research that is carried out supports the development of methodologies for managing the human factors of risk contexts and extreme contexts, safety culture, governance, LSO (social license to operate), and ESG (environmental, social, and governance).

In 2022 we completed a cycle of research that opens up new possibilities for action in contexts in which there are risks involved. Our research today has proved that intangible factors, such as trust and culture, are critical for achieving results in these contexts. We have discovered that the intangible factors that come into play in risk management are the same as those that have an impact on the competitiveness of our economy. A summary of these findings can be found in our book: O Elo Perdido, written by Carmen Migueles and Marco Tulio Zanini. The results are promising right from the macro level, where we find a strong correlation between weak competitiveness and lack of confidence in our economy, to the micro level, where we were able to isolate those management factors that generate countless internal risks and losses in the organization, but that go unknown and unmeasured.

The uncertainty arising from our institutional configuration in the public area, and from the forms of management and association in the private area, has a negative impact on risks and decisions in both the public and private context in Brazil. There is a lot of room for individuals and organizations to act and many opportunities.

In line with FGV EBAPE's mission: “To build and disseminate knowledge in administration while strengthening the synergy between the public and the private sectors, by training professionals to influence the thoughts and practices relevant to Brazil’s development with conceptual and methodological rigor”, CESGRi’s main objective is to develop, promote and share knowledge on topics that are related to its priority lines of research, thereby supporting Brazilian organizations in those change management efforts that are necessary for moving towards achieving superior results in various areas.

The Center’s Objectives

Knowledge Production:

Coordinating and carrying out research in partnership with Brazilian and international institutions.

Training:

Sharing research results and their practical implications, and arranging the exchange of experiences between researchers, public and private sector executives, and study groups.

Sharing and Broadcasting

Events, webinars, and other digital broadcasting resources.

Expansion and Influence:

Articulating and participating in the forums of partner organizations of CESGRi, arranging panelists for conferences, and debates.

Creating indicators and diagnostic methodologies:

For safety culture, human factors in risk contexts, sensemaking and interpreting signals while operating under tight time constraints, developing leaders for extreme contexts, institutional voids, and socio-environmental risk management, linked to regulation by public sector institutions, and ESG and SLO for private sector organizations.

Together we can:

  • Start a movement that is able to foster innovation in Brazilian organizations, with support for consistent change management.
  • Reduce operational risks (industrial, logistical, and institutional) in Brazil by improving the governance of our organizations and their influence over these factors.
  • Support organizations in managing their intangible assets and liabilities in order to reduce unmeasured losses and achieve gains in safety, trust, competitiveness, productivity, and innovation.
target

Our commitments:

  • To publish the results and the relevance of applied research to public and private organizations in Brazil.
  • To increase the influence of research and researchers in terms of producing results for society.
  • To support the development of executive influence in relation to introducing the necessary changes in organizations and institutions in Brazilian society.
  • To support organizations by increasing their ability to influence other organizations with regard to relationship and research networks for improving results, thereby generating positive outcomes for society, increasing brand value, enhancing the reputation of public and private organizations, and inspiring trust in them.
  • To support the development of executives so they acquire a greater capacity for achieving superior results in risk management as a result of applied research.
  • To support the development of executive influence in relation to introducing the necessary changes in organizations and institutions in Brazilian society.
